It was a dark and stormy night, and still they came! Yes, NHS held its second Open House at the Round House Community Center and despite the tragic conditions outside, inside there was an air of community and buoyancy. Marty and Darcy Billinkoff shared slides and stories from their fund raising climb of Everest Base Camp. Shabniz, Dara and Rima provided fashion tips to those buying scarves and shawls, mama Sharma kept us well fed with Chai and snacks. Gretchen and Michelle shared experiences of working with the staff in Nepal and Ashwin talked and talked.
The Nepal House Society held its second Annual Board Meeting on September 16th, 2009. The meeting was attended by board member, friends and returning volunteers. The business part of the meeting showed that the efforts of the members have resulted in a much healthier bank account. Gretchen Ladd gave a presentation on her work at Nepal House Kaski in Pokhara as she shared her skills as an art therapist with our staff and the greater community. Gretchen Ladd, Michelle Crowley and Camille Traverse were honoured for their volunteer efforts in Nepal.
We are pleased to announce that Darcy and Marty Billinkoff will be heading off to Nepal this October to trek up to Everest Base Camp, undoubtedly one of the most famous hikes in the world, to raise funds and awareness for Nepal House Society. Starting from Lukla, they will be hiking for 18 days, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, as they pass by friendly Sherpa villages and Buddhist monasteries. The climb will take them to an altitude of 5,545 metres (18,192 ft) at Kala Pattar, for a magnificent view of Everest before arriving at Base Camp.

In December of 2008, Vancouver art therapist and teacher Gretchen Ladd travelled to Pokhara, Nepal. Her suitcase was not filled with climbing apparatus, trekking shoes or protein bars; her bags were filled with paint, pastels, beads, glitter and fun. Gretchen arrived to teach sixteen counsellors, social workers, orphanage staff and interested folks how to use art materials in a therapeutic way to support traumatized children. This was Nepal House's first foray into training staff from other organizations.
